I gave up on his columns after his June tirade about the Richard Worth affair in which he said that "The Left – especially the Feminist Left – has come down firmly on the side of the women, painting them has the helpless prey of a powerful and predatory male", and "In the ever-diminishing sorority of radical feminist ideologues, all that is required to convict a man of sexual misconduct is a woman’s accusation" and then went on to respond to an excellent and thoughtful comment by Stargazer with this: "With respect, Stargazer, I think the reason you are so unwilling to "pick it apart" has very little to do with time, and great deal more to do with your apprehension that once the fundamental principles of your brand of identity politics are opened up to genuine scrutiny and debate, the premises upon which they rest will not be able to withstand the pressure, and the entire ideological edifice within which you are obliged to operate will crumble and collapse". etc. etc. (I agree with Stargazer that that particular post, available at
http://bowalleyroad.blogspot.com/2009/06/helpless-victims.html
has "a strong whiff of redneckery".) Chris is trying to hide the fact that he has turned against feminism behind what he clearly thinks is a robust critique of "identity politics." But why has he turned against feminism? Why set up ridiculous feminist straw-women. When have we EVER painted "victims" as "the helpless prey of a powerful and predatory male"-- that's just pulled out of his nether region. Rather, we've tried to empower women and call out their abusers. What Chris does to feminism these days is right out of the conservative playbook -- caricature it and then shoot down the caricature. Brave huntsmen that they are. Which brings me back to Chris's balls -- much as I don't want to go there -- and what's wrong them these days. Nothing that a good kick wouldn't cure, I suppose.captiverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12487310973939331498noreply@blogger.com
